A Walk Through "Walk Through The Pages"

In 1999 and 2006, I had the privilege of accompanying our church group to the Holy Land. I had no idea what a profound impact these trips would have on my understanding of the stage upon which the ongoing story of redemption began. Between the two pilgrimages, I had the opportunity to sing on the Sea of Galilee (in a boat), on the Mount of Olives looking out on Jerusalem, in the Upper Room, on the Tel of Megiddo overlooking the Valley of Armageddon, and several other holy sites. After experiencing the Holy Land for myself, I wanted to record a CD that, in chronological order, contained songs that told some of my favorite Bible stories of the Holy Land and that gave compelling spiritual challenges with thought provoking lyrics and maybe even a little fun and good humor.

This unique CD recording has been years in the making, but the story which it tells started before time began. In tackling a book that spans nearly 750,000 words, one can hardly hope to encompass the grand scale on which this divinely inspired, 6,000 year old drama takes place. However, with much prayer and preparation, I hope that with 12 songs and 45 minutes I am able to take you on your own musical pilgrimage through the pages of Holy Scripture. May the Holy Spirit enable you to capture some of the spiritual themes, unparalleled continuity, and enduring stories that He breathed into the hearts of the writers.

With God's help, I believe that I have accomplished the dream that He set into motion years ago. I pray that every time you play this project you are not only transported cover to cover, but that you have an encounter with its Author.

"Through The Pages" sets up the project with an explanation of why and wherefore I'm recording it. One of the key lines in this original song penned by my Dad, James Pike, is, "it's the ongoing story of redemption's history". The Bible tells why redemption was needed, how God brought it about, and what that means for us. But from the last verse until now, redemption's history is still being written in me and you.
Romans 8:1-39; Colossians 3:1-10; John 14:9-21
Talk about this song at the Forum.

Verse 1
You may never get to walk where the Savior trod.
But you don't have to go that far to see the hand of God;
For if you'll look back on your life
You'll see what God can do
You'll see that He has walked through the pages with you.

Chorus
Through the pages you will see
A loving God and Savior
Our glorious Redeemer
And soon coming King
It's the ongoing story
Of redemption's history
You can look through the pages and you'll see

Verse 2
Jesus walked upon the earth with mortal man
And if He really lives within us, He is walking here again.
Yes, you can walk where Christ is walking,
Making history.
And when you look through the pages you'll see

Chorus

And then, "In The Cool of the Day" tells of the beginning of God's redemptive plan. Fittingly, the song begins in Genesis, where the Garden of Eden illustrates God's intended relationship with man, the fall of man, and what God intended to do about it.
Genesis 3:1-24; 1 Peter 1:18-21; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
Adam was walking in the garden God made;
He had never known sin.
God's voice was heard in the cool of the day
In sweet communion with him.
Then sin came along and man was cast down
To labor and toil to the grave.
As the hot sun beat down, I'm sure he remembered
Those good times in the cool of the day.

Chorus

In the cool of the day with God
Troubles and cares melt away
Oh what bliss, in a place like this
Alone with God, in the cool of the day.

Verse 2
It seemed all was lost, but God had a plan
To redeem the world He loved.
Sin required the best of the best
So God sent His lamb from above.
And there on the hill, the cry of that Lamb
Was heard and the price was paid!
So now I can walk, and once more I can talk
With God in the cool of the day!

Chorus

"I Am" follows and highlights some of the most recognized names in Scripture. Abraham, Moses, David, and even a glimpse into the New Testament with Paul. Stepping over into our time, with you and me, it speaks of who they were, and who we are, because of who He is. "I'm Your servant, and You're the Great I AM".
Exodus 3:1-22; Genesis 15:1-21; Psalms 116:1-19; 2 Timothy 4:1-8
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
I am Abraham. I’ve come to sacrifice to You.
I will offer up my best; nothing less will do.
I will climb that mountain and lay my Isaac down
I am Abraham and You’re the great I AM.

Verse 2
I am Moses. On holy ground I stand
And I now surrender to go at Your command
This staff that You have given Lord, I will lay it down
I am Moses and You’re the great I AM.

Verse 3
I am David. Until the ending of my days
I will offer up to You a sacrifice of praise
For You are my shepherd and You will gently lay me down
I am David and You’re the great I AM.

Verse 4
I am Paul, and I am crucified with Christ.
I count the sufferings of this world as a crown of life
And when they come for me tomorrow and the soldiers lay me down
I am Paul and You’re the great I AM.

Verse 5
So let me rise above the struggles of my own apathy
And let me seek the higher calling with the grace You’ve given me.
And all my selfish honor, I will lay it down.
I’m Your servant, and You’re the great I AM.

"Gonna Take It And Leave It" … you'll rarely hear a sermon about prayer that doesn't reference Daniel and his pattern of prayer that warranted him power in prayer. With a one man quartet/big band swing approach, here's Daniel's story, and our model of a Godly prayer life.
Daniel 6:1-28; 1 Peter 1:3-9
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
Daniel was a man who took a stand for God one day
The next thing he knew he was thrown into the lions den to stay
Well Daniel turned it over and then God turned it around
And the lions mouths were closed as they fell silent to the ground

Chorus
I'm gonna take it and leave it at an altar of prayer
I'm gonna give it to Jesus cause I know that he'll bear
All my burdens and my needs; I'm gonna lay it at His feet.
He can solve my every problem and He can heal my deep despair
I'm gonna take it and leave it at an old fashioned altar of prayer.

Verse 2
Well I see children love the Lord who can't seem to catch on
They try to solve their weary circumstances all alone
If they could only realize God wants their misery
So He can take it and shake it and break it and make it a stone beneath their feet

Chorus

In "Wake Up Call", with four part harmony and one piano, Jonah takes the stage. Here's a new spin on a well known "whale of a tale" about obedience and the consequences of disobedience. In this story, as through all of Scripture, you can clearly see God's hand accomplishing God's will.
Jonah 1:1 - 3:10; 1 John 2:3-5
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
God told Jonah, "Go down to Nineveh and preach the words I've said".
But Jonah, he had other plans, so he went the other way instead.
As the storm did rage on the sea that day, he did not remain on board
So after three long days in the belly of the whale, he surrendered to the Lord.

Chorus
What a wake up call
Jonah finally saw the light
What a wake up call
He took the wrong and made it right
So when you think your way is best
Take a look at Jonah's fall
It's better to obey the Lord than receive a wake up call.

Verse 2
Jonah went down to preach the holy Word and how the power did move
The people listened and believed, then revival it came breaking through
Jonah's trust and faith were right in place for a miracle to see
So listen closely to the instruction of the Lord, He knows where you need to be.

Chorus
What a wake up call
Jonah finally saw the light
What a wake up call
He took the wrong and made it right
So when you think your way is best
Take a look at Jonah's fall
It's better to obey the Lord than receive a wake up call.

It's better to obey the Lord than receive a wake up call.

The Old Testament gives way to the New with the search of the wise men in the first line of "Hope Has Hands". This song paints more clearly the sight they saw in the manger than any sermon or song I've ever heard. It speaks of what Christ was, what He came to do, and Who He is still today.
Philippians 2:6-11; Isaiah 53; John 1:14; Isaiah 9:6-7; 2 Corinthians 4:6
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
In search of a child they traveled so far
Led by a star to a place of joy
Now the wise men tell a beautiful story
Describing the glory of a baby boy

Chorus
Hope has hands
Freedom has feet
Truth will stand
The word will speak
The holy and lowly will finally embrace
For love has a heartbeat
And grace has a face

Verse 2
Compassion has a tear; Joy has a laughter
And here ever after peace has a smile
Redemption’s blood has veins to flow in
A temple to glow in; Light is a child

Chorus
Hope has hands
Freedom has feet
Truth will stand; the Word will speak
The holy and lowly will finally embrace
For love has a heartbeat
And grace has a face

The holy and lowly will finally embrace
For love has a heartbeat
Love has a heartbeat
And grace has a face

"The Ragged Edge" speaks to the saved, the lost, and the prodigal. This is the story of one desperate woman, crazy enough to believe that if she were to but touch the ragged hem of Jesus' garment, she would be made whole. Her story shows us that for the life or situation that is worn, torn, frazzled, frayed, and in need of patching, there is hope "on the ragged edge." In Christ's vocabulary, there are no 'hopeless causes' and no 'helpless situations.'
Matthew 11:28-30; Matthew 5:1-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; Luke 14:16-23
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
All the doctors say it's over
She tries not to complain
For twelve long years she's suffered
In a prison house of pain
Life is slipping through her fingers
And hope's tearing at the seams
And she's holding on to nothing
But a few unraveling dreams
Jesus Christ is passing by her way
And the edge of his robe is worn and ragged
but she hangs on to the fray

Chorus
He said, "Ye who are weary and so heavy laden
Come and I'll give you rest"
There is help for the helpless, hope for the hopeless
On the ragged edge

Verse 2
For the friendship that's unraveled
For the marriage torn apart
For the angry son or daughter
Trying to hide a broken heart
For those stumbling in the darkness
For the lonely, sick, and lost
For those shackled to addiction
There is healing in the cross
And for every heart that's hanging on the fray
There is mercy with Jesus, sweet forgiveness,
and He's passing by your way

Chorus
And He said, "Ye who are weary and so heavy laden
Come and I'll give you rest"
There is help for the helpless, hope for the hopeless
On the ragged edge

Chorus

There's help for the helpless, hope for the hopeless
On the ragged edge

"Pigs Flew" -- What Gospel album would be complete without a song of this title and this message? Pulling from a lesser-known story in the Bible, this song paints a tongue in cheek, yet strong and memorable message about Christ's ability to do the impossible in our lives. Depression, oppression, worry, and fear find a watery grave at Christ's command.
Luke 8:26-39; Mark 9:14-29; Matthew 17:19-20
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
In a graveyard on the shore of Galilee
A demon possessed man was longing to be free
Jesus stepped ashore and in Love He spoke the Word
Then the demons that possessed the man were thrown in to a herd

Chorus
Pigs flew down the cliff into the sea
That demon possessed man said "Thank God I’m free!"
Just believe the Gospel story I'll tell you that it's true
Just a Word from Jesus will make pigs fly for you.

Verse 2
Are you are living in the places of the dead?
Do you long to know the Truth of what the Bible said?
Are the troubles that fill your mind enough to fill a herd?
They’ll all fly away when Jesus speaks His Holy Word.

Chorus

"Teach Me To Love Like That" -- In the Greek, as in this song, Love has many meanings. Each verse of this song has a different lesson, a different aspect of what Jesus was, and what we as Christians are commanded to be and do. In the first verse, we see the acceptance, understanding, and compassion for fallen humanity that Jesus gave the woman caught in the act. Then the second verse shows the kindness, patience, and servanthood that Jesus gave Judas from the beginning, knowing that Judas would betray him. Finally, the song tells of the utter forgiveness, transcendent goodness, and persistent love our Lord displayed while wrongfully on trial, being scoffed and laughed at, and finally crucified.
Luke 23:32-35; Matthew 26:1-75; John 8:1-11

Verse 1
They brought You a woman caught in the act
and said You were bound by the Law.
You never looked up; Your words were exact.
Compassion was all that they saw.

Chorus
Teach me to love like that, when it matters most.
I want to live without fear.
Teach me to love like that, keep drawing me close
‘Til the only clear voice that I hear
Is something that You’d say. I wanna live Your way.
Teach me to love like that.

Verse 2
You sat with the twelve at the Passover feast
And told them of great things to come.
“This is My body,” You said, “Take, and eat”.
It would be the last supper for some.

Bridge
And even in the end when they scoffed and they laughed at You
“Father, please forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Chorus
Teach me to love like that, when it matters most.
I want to live without fear.
Teach me to love like that, keep drawing me close
‘Til the only clear voice that I hear
Is something that You’d say. I wanna live Your way.
Teach me to love like that.

"Did He Hear My Cry?" is the question echoed through the ages by all of God's children. Regardless of the stage of life we find ourselves in, we want to know if He sees us, feels our pain, rejoices in our good times, helps us in the hard times, and if He truly orchestrates our lives according to His will. This four minute song was written in five minutes by my Dad, James Pike, on a tearstained scrap piece of paper in his car. If you want to know the answer to the question, push play.

Verse 1 (Her)
Oh oh I wonder, did He see me? Was I lost in the crowd?
Did He hear me cry out to Him? The world around me is so loud.
Does He even care for me... why should I think it so?
My heart is longing for Him and I just have to know.

Chorus
Did He hear my cry?
(Him: I'm listening for you)
Did I catch His eye?
(Him: You're always in My view)
Is there hope for us together?
(Him: I already made a way)
Am I just dreaming
(Together: about our wedding day)

Verse 2 (Him)
Oh I wonder, did she see me hanging high above the crowd?
Did she hear Me whisper to her? The world around her is so loud.
Does she know I care for her, and that I love her so?
My heart is longing for her, and I just have to know.

Chorus
Did she hear My cry?
(Her: I'm listening for You)
Did I catch her eye?
(Her: You're always in my view)
Is there hope for us together?
(Her: I know You made a way)
Am I just dreaming
(Together: About out wedding day)

(Together)
It’s the great love story, written in the Bible pages:
The marriage of the church with the Rock Of Ages.
He sees! He knows! He hears every cry from you!
And He waits to hear you say
(Her: I do)

"The Tomb Is Empty" For the time leading up to February of 1999, my family scrimped and saved to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. While most on our trip took cameras, my Dad took pen and paper. At each site, he captured the moments and feelings with words. Our visit to the Garden Tomb brought about a song that speaks of a tomb devoid of death and full of hope. The tomb is not simply about eternal life in heaven, but also about victorious life while here on earth. A sarcophagus out of work and a Savior risen from death is the crux of our faith, the essence of our hope, the means to a victorious life, and the assurance of our own resurrection after we die.
Acts 1:3; Acts 2:22-33; Philippians 3:10-14; 1 Corinthians 15:12-19; 2 Corinthians 4:13-18
Talk about this song at the "Forum".

Verse 1
They laid my Savior's body
in an empty, borrowed tomb.
Not knowing three days later
it would become salvation's womb.
In death they buried him,
but in hope He rose again!
Hear the cry of his disciples,
As they looked where He had been:

Chorus
The tomb is empty
There's no body lying there
The tomb is empty
Death never had a prayer
Death’s defeated in vict’ry
Hope now lives forevermore
The tomb is empty
That gives me Hope worth living for

Verse 2
I've looked upon the hillside
where my debt of sin was paid,
I've journeyed to the garden
where Jesus' body once was laid,
I found no bones remaining,
they're gone without a trace,
now I live today in freedom
As a trophy of His grace!

Chorus

Bridge
Death is buried; life lives eternally;
By His resurrection, I am free, yes, free indeed!

Chorus

"He Is" Just in case I missed a spot, this song very literally incorporates every book of The Bible. From the old covenant to the new covenant, it speaks of Who God was and is to His people. This is an anthem to our God, Jehovah, speaking His attributes, His mighty works, and His majesty.
